Matt Lebon — Founder & Designer
I’m Matt Lebon, the founder and designer behind Serviceberry Foodscapes. I help people create beautiful, ecological, abundant landscapes that bring food production into the places where we live—from raised bed gardens and food forests to pollinator gardensand whole-yard designs.
I’ve spent the past two decades farming, gardening, and learning from the land. Before moving to Ithaca, New York, I founded Custom Foodscapes in St. Louis, where I spent 10 years designing and installing hundreds of ecological edible landscapes for homeowners, schools, organizations, and community spaces.
My path into this work began as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, where I was first bitten by the gardening bug. From there, I completed a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC), pursued advanced coursework in permaculture, water management, and horticulture, and became a Certified Water Harvesting Practicioner through the Watershed Management Group. I also worked on farms and spent five seasons at the EarthDance Organic Farm School. Over time, I became increasingly fascinated by one question: How can we weave food production beautifully into the landscapes where we live, work, and play?
That question still guides my work today.
With Serviceberry Foodscapes, I’m focusing on the part of this work I love most: helping people see what their land could become. I offer consultations and ecological edible landscape design for local clients in New York, as well as remote design for properties throughout the Eastern US.
I’m also the founder of The Foodscaper, an educational platform and professional community for edible landscapers. I host The Foodscaper Podcast and organize the annual Foodscaper Conference, bringing together practitioners who are helping grow the field of professional edible landscaping.
At the heart of all of this work is a simple belief: food connects us. When we grow food with reverence for the land, our landscapes can become places that nourish us, support ecological life, and create a little everyday magic.
